Robustness of Optimal Sensor Methods in Dynamic Testing–Comparison and Implementation on a Footbridge

One of the objectives structural health monitoring (SHM) is to maximize information while keeping number sensors, and consequently cost sensor system, a minimum. Besides, configurations must be robust in sense that feasibility small errors inherent process not lead large variations final results. This paper presents novelties regarding robustness evaluation model measurement four most influential optimal placement (OSP) methods: modal kinetic energy (MKE) method; effective independence (EFI) entropy index (IEI) MinMAC method. The OSP methods were implemented on Streicker Bridge, footbridge located Princeton University Campus, identify five mode shapes bridge. shapes, obtained FE model’s analysis, used as input data for analyses. study indicates MKE method seems suitable estimate positions: it provides relatively amount with lowest computational time, outperforms other three terms usual range sensors.
